“Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings.”

It has been a busy, productive, wonderful few weeks. I can’t believe we are in the month of February. The kids continue to make great academic gains as well as growing their stamina, maturity, and drive.
Our morning meetings have been deep, engaging, and insightful. Some questions or scenarios I have posed are….. “Your energy introduces you before you even speak… what does yours say about you?” --- “What is your superpower?” --- sharing weekend highlights --- engaging in some fun fast math verbal challenges - team work challenges --- “What is most valuable to you?” and “What makes you feel most alive?”
In math, I try to vary the warm ups everyday.. The kids have enjoyed number riddles, Pico Fermi Bagels, IQ challenges, logic riddles, estimation 180, around the world with math facts, and practicing the 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication algorithm. The concepts we have been working with are multi digit multiplication and division (sharing, estimating, interpreting the remainder, patterning with 0’s and the long division algorithm). The kids have worked with Perfect Squares (square numbers), and have done many fun exercises which makes them think deeply…… Tug of War, sharing money among friends, Pigs and Ducks, Cats and kittens and fleas and spiders, and a big fat juicy Einstein packet. I worked with the kids a little each day, showing them divisibility tricks from 2-12. These little rules have already helped them as they are grouping things, doing the algorithm, and in their future reducing fractions, etc.
For Science, we finished up the water cycle. I found a great glacier
Time lapse video.. showing the decline and change that is occuring. The kids did some jigsaw presentations with their water cycle material. They enjoyed presenting and learning from each other. We had a class period where the kids got to use the virtual reality technology…. They enjoyed it immensely. There were squeals of delight, that almost hurt my ears!! The kids have been working on a weather expedition this past week… searching up weather data from 4 National Parks, while compiling some other interesting facts and information. They will start writing from all of their observations and collections today.
